Around 70–80% of petition efforts fail because they do not gather enough valid signatures to meet the required minimum. Even among collected signatures, a significant portion may be disqualified due to issues like voter registration errors, residency requirements, or other technicalities.
To compensate for these risks, national best practices recommend gathering 25–50% more signatures than the minimum required.
Large petition firms often spend significant amounts of money to verify their petitions — but even after paying for verification, they do not receive access to the underlying database, cannot contact the individuals who signed, and cannot use that information for donations or Get Out The Vote (GOTV) activities when their petitions are on the ballot.
